Will Meriam, a Muslim turned Christian in Sudan be killed for marrying a Christian?
For the past nine months now, Meriam Ibrahim has been under a solitary confinement in decrepit and dilapidated prison in Sudan after she was sentenced to prison by a Sharia Court for marrying a Christian, Daniel Wani.
If Meriam who was chained when she was to give birth in the prison does not renounce being a Christian and return to Islam – the predominant religion in Sudan, a country notorious for its stiff laws and barbaric treatment of adherents of other faith will be sentenced to death in two weeks time with 100 lashes.
According to the local authorities, Meriam committed an offence punishable under Sharia laws for marrying her husband, a naturalised American who lives in Manchester, New Hampshire. The authorities claim she was a Muslim by birth and so had committed a grievous sin in their estimation by going into marriage with a non-Muslim.
The international community has been pressing the Sudanese authorities to set her free but the government is unwilling to listen to any pleas on her case, they intent on pressing ahead with the barbaric punishment.
The Sharia court has postponed her sentence, to give her time to recover from childbirth and to wean her new baby; Meriam could be killed if the government maintains its position. As it is only a miracle might safe her neck even though her lawyers are willing to explore every legal means to rescue her.
If political atmosphere of our continent is not conducive for living, must religion exacerbate it?
